Chris Waller provides BRC Sires' quinella

Saturday 26 May 2018, 2:20pm

Premier trainer Chris Waller's quinella in Saturday's Group Two BRC Sires' Produce Stakes has given him a stranglehold on an even bigger prize.

The Sires' Produce (1350m) was marred by two late scratchings at the barrier including the race favourite Graff while Mischieviousmarilyn broke down in the run.

But Waller was able to provide the winner Lean Mean Machine ($14) who scored by three-quarters of a length to stablemate Zousain ($4.60) with short half-head to dead heaters Boomsara ($15) and Sizzling Ace ($7) in third.

Waller trained Pressday and Zoustar to win the Sires' in 2010 and 2013 respectively.

Waller will this year's quinella pair into the Group One JJ Atkins (1600m) on June 9 where he will also have unbeaten The Autumn Sun who won at Randwick on Saturday.

"Lean Mean Machine is a very good horse," Waller said.

"He had no luck at the Gold Coast at his previous start and I told Corey (jockey Brown) to ride him like he was the best horse and go straight back from his bad barrier today."

Zousain led in the Sires' and Waller said that had not suited him.

"He is still getting used to going from the 1200m races to the 1350m. But he will improve for it," Waller said.

"The Autumn Sun is preparation behind these two but he is also very promising."

Kerrin McEvoy, who rode Zousain, said the gelding didn't settle early and had still battled on well.

Glyn Schofield said Sizzling Ace probably should have run second after being forced to alter course in the straight.
