Waller opts against blinkers on Oaks fancy

Thursday 24 May 2018, 11:27am

Trainer Chris Waller has elected not to add blinkers to Youngstar's raceday gear in the Group One Queensland Oaks on Saturday.

Youngstar burst into Oaks favouritism with a runaway win the Doomben Roses (2000m) two weeks ago.

The filly worked in blinkers last week and Waller tried them on the filly again on Tuesday.

But Waller's Queensland stable manager Paul Shailer said Youngstar wanted to go too hard in her work.

"It was too big a risk for a Group One race and she will race the same way she did in the Roses," he said.

Youngstar beat her stablemate Another Dollar in the Roses and Shailer gives the latter a chance of reversing the placings.

"Another Dollar has finally drawn a good barrier. She has had no luck at all lately," Shailer said.

Glyn Schofield replaces Jeff Lloyd on Another Dollar while Kerrin McEvoy retains the ride on Youngstar.

While Youngstar and Another Dollar have taken the traditional path to the Oaks through the Roses, Waller has three other runners coming off diverse preparations.

Ten of the past 15 Oaks winners have come through the Roses but Scarlett Lady in 2011 was the last to complete the double.

Waller has five runners in the Oaks with Savacool, Impulsive and Miss Shanti also accepting.

Savacool is coming off a seventh in the Australasian Oaks at Morphettville while Impulsive is a last-start Gold Coast winner.

Miss Shanti, who races in the same colours as 2015 Oaks winner Winx, has been placed at her two most recent runs in NSW provincial races.

Waller has won the race twice with Winx and Egg Tart and neither ran in The Roses.

"All five have pleased us this week and after a quinella in the Doomben Cup last week we are hoping to go even better in the Oaks," Shailer said.
