Havasay comes from last to win at Doomben

Saturday 12 May 2018, 11:55am

Stable foreman Trent Edmonds was quick to deflect any credit after former Liam Birchley-trained sprinter Havasay won at Doomben.

Havasay ($5.50) charged home from the tail of the field to beat Echo Effect ($6) by 1-1/4 lengths with a head to Exceedingly ($9.50) third in the Swire Shipping Handicap (1110m).

The gelding was one of six horses sent from Birchley's stable to Toby Edmonds on the Gold Coast after Birchley was disqualified for a year for his part in the Aquanita case on Thursday.

Birchley will appeal a year's disqualification imposed after he was found guilty of being a party to a race-day treatment.

"We have only had the horse since Thursday so it is a bit hard to say much. But he arrived in terrific order and he is obviously in for a big campaign," Trent Edmonds said.

It was the second winner in as many days for Edmonds with former Birchley horses as he won with Super Suave at Ipswich on Friday.

Winning jockey Matt McGillivray said Havasay had appreciated a fast early pace and sprinted quickly.

"It was a very strong win and he had a bit on them," McGillivray said.
