Goathland to give Waugh another stakes win

Thursday 10 May 2018, 2:04pm

Former English stayer Goathland can further enhance the reputation of horses sold out of the Lloyd Williams operation with a stakes win at Doomben.

Goathland won at Bath in England before being bought by Williams as a possible Cups horse two years ago.

He won a race at Flemington last year but Williams decided to move him on.

Trainer Kim Waugh's husband Mark Waugh and Williams came to an agreement with Goathland and Our Century leaving Macedon Lodge for Wyong.

Kim Waugh said they had gone further than expected, ending up with two horses from the leviathan owner who has won six Melbourne Cups.

"We were only going to buy one horse but we liked Goathland and Our Century and we ended up with both," Waugh said.

"It has worked out well as both have won Cup races.

"You know any horse you get from Lloyd has been well looked after and you know they have breeding and the soundness to win.

"Lloyd wants to win the Melbourne Cup and if he has horses he doesn't think can do that, he moves them to make way for the next ones."

Goathland won the Anzac Day Cup at 1800m at his first start for Waugh and steps up to 2000m in the Group Three Chairman's Handicap at Doomben on Saturday.

"Our Century is headed to the McKell Cup at Rosehill (May 26} and all being well both will run in the Brisbane Cup (June 9)," Waugh said.

Waugh has won several stakes races in Brisbane including the 2006 Group Two O'Shea Stakes with Mahtoum, winner of the Sydney Cup the year before.

She was quick to snare Kerrin McEvoy to ride Goathland on Saturday.

"They don't come any better than Kerrin and I am sure he will work the track out," Waugh said.
