Time for Ben Smith-trained mare in 10,000

Thursday 10 May 2018, 11:00am

A better Doomben 10,000 barrier draw for In Her Time has trainer Ben Smith thinking her luck in Brisbane has finally changed.

But he won't be leaving anything to chance as the mare chases her second Group One win on Saturday.

In Her Time has drawn barrier eight in a field of 14 which may not sound something to celebrate.

"It is a lot better than she was getting here last time. We had no luck with the barriers here last time and it cost us dearly," Smith said.

In Her Time drew barrier 11 in last year's 10,000 and finished an unlucky fifth.

Her luck didn't change in two other Brisbane Group One races when she was second in the Stradbroke from barrier 12 and third in the Tatt's Tiara from also from barrier 12.

"This time she should be able to get cover in the first four or five. There is a bit of speed drawn inside her." Smith said.

"It is the way she likes to work in her races. It is a tough race so we will need things to go our way."

Smith will walk the Doomben track on Friday to look for the best ground.

"It is something we always do in getting a local to walk with us. We don't want to leave anything to chance," he added.

In Her Time will have only one more run in Brisbane after the 10,000 in the Stradbroke Handicap.

She will then return to Newcastle for a break before being prepared for The Everest in the Sydney spring.

Since her last visit north in Her Time has confirmed her rating as one of Australia's top sprinters by winning the Group One Galaxy and finishing third in the Group One TJ Smith Stakes during the Sydney autumn.

In the TJ Smith, In Her Time finished behind Trapeze Artist and Redzel with the latter the favourite to defend the 10,000 just ahead of the mare.

All three TJ Smith placegetters have secured slots in the $13 million Everest at Randwick in October won last year by Redzel.
