Egyptian Bullet lands longshot Sandown win

Wednesday 9 May 2018, 2:35pm

Mornington trainer John McArdle is developing a love-hate relationship with punters.

At Morphettville last Saturday the McArdle-trained I'll Have A Bit scored a knockout blow taking out the Group Two Euclase Stakes, returning a starting price of $151.

Another McArdle roughie landed on Wednesday at Sandown with $21 chance Egyptian Bullet winning the Polytrack Handicap.

Egyptian Bullet's price surprised McArdle after she had scored a first-up win at Werribee last month when a $3.90 favourite.

"I said to the boys she was a good each-way chance because she's a winner," McArdle said of the five-time winner from 10 career starts.

"The races where she's run fourth or worse, a couple have been in stakes races and a couple have been down the straight at Flemington which she didn't handle.

"The question today was whether it was going to be a little bit short for her coming back to the 1000 metres, but there wasn't the right race for her so we kept her a bit fresh, used Lachie's (King) claim and it worked out well."

McArdle said he would study the calendar to find a suitable race in an attempt to maintain the filly's unbeaten this campaign.

I'll Have A Bit heads back to Adelaide for Saturday week's Group One Goodwood at Morphettville after returning from her Euclase Stakes win in top shape.

"She came home too well and came off the track bucking this morning," McArdle said.

"I reckon I need to do some more work with her.

"The 53.5kg isn't an ideal weight but it's a set-weights and penalties race so we've really got no choice."
