Machinegun Jubs ready for Scone return

Tuesday 8 May 2018, 5:50pm

Angela Davies is keen for Machinegun Jubs to experience black-type racing for the first time, but the Gosford trainer is wary of launching the mare's quest at Scone.

The five-year-old has been nominated for the Listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m) but Davies fears the competition may prove too intimidating once the field is confirmed on Wednesday.

Bred and raced by Michael Abdallah, Machinegun Jubs is among a cluster of 53kg lightweight chances with dual Group One winner Terravista the 61kg topweight.

"We're in a pretty tough race in the Ortensia," she said.

"Zestful gets in with 55 and a half. I'd be giggling if I was Kris Lees. That's how I've got to look at it."

She pointed out Zestful already has a Group Three win on her record through last year's Triscay Stakes (1200m).

Before a let-up leading into Saturday's race she was runner-up to Faraway Town in this year's edition of the Triscay at Randwick in February.

"In all fairness Machinegun Jubs should have about eight kilos on her," Davies said.

Machinegun Jubs is also nominated for a Benchmark 80 Handicap (1100m), a more appealing option despite her being slugged with 61kg.

Ideally Machinegun Jubs, who has six wins and six minor placings from 18 starts, will head to Brisbane for the first time to be aimed at Listed fillies and mares races.

The Helen Coughlan Stakes (1200m) at the Sunshine Coast on June 2 is a goal.

"That's why she's back in now. It would be lovely if she got in the right race up there," Davies said.

Machinegun Jubs last raced in January when she finished second in a Benchmark 81 Handicap (1200m) at Randwick.
