Change of scene to inspire Green Sweet

Tuesday 8 May 2018, 4:20pm

Danny Williams is hoping Green Sweet's new beachside surrounds at Moruya will help the the gelding rediscover his taste for racing.

Williams primarily trains at Goulburn but a month ago he followed the lead of Canberra horseman Matt Dale and opened a satellite stable at Moruya, on the NSW south coast, so a handful of horses could take advantage of a relaxed lifestyle.

Once fellow Goulburn trainer Jean Dubois learned of the expansion he approached Williams and urged him to take on the six-year-old.

"Jean said he'd got to the stage where he lost a bit of form and he'd lost interest," Williams said.

Green Sweet will race for the first time since late December in Friday's Listed Scone Cup (1600m) and Williams admits he is unsure how competitive he will be.

"He's been happy in his new environment and hopefully this will reinvigorate him. He's going to benefit from the run whatever he does," he said.

Green Sweet had 10 races in France before joining Dubois in mid-2016.

At his second start in Australia, he won last year's Listed Albury Gold Cup (2000m) but has not been placed in four subsequent runs.

Williams also saddles up three-year-old filly She Knows in Saturday's Listed Denise's Joy Stakes (1100m) after scratching her from a Benchmark 83 Handicap over the same distance at Rosehill last Saturday.

"You don't get too many three-year-old Listed races at 1100 metres. The Benchmarks are more regular so she'll have a go at this," he said.

She Knows made a successful return from a freshen-up to claim the Highway Handicap (1100m) at the Hawkesbury stand-alone meeting on April 28 .

The Moruya stables can accommodate five horses, with Don't Give A Damn, Kopi Luwak and Acquittal spending time there before The Championships.

"We felt it was a great opportunity to freshen horses up and give them a different outlook to utilise the beach and the (Moruya) river," Williams said.
