Browne steals show in Gunsynd Classic win

Saturday 28 April 2018, 4:47pm

Jockey Damian Browne produced the ride of the day to claim the second leg of a feature race double on Villermont in the Group Three Gunsynd Classic (1600m) at Doomben.

Browne won the main race on Impending in the Group Two Victory Stakes with an astute ride.

But he even outdid that when he got Villermont ($3.50) got home by a nose to Dark Dream ($3.80) with 5-1/2 lengths to Omineca ($7.50) in third place.

Villermont was trainer Ciaron Maher's second runner in Brisbane since returning from a suspension.

He has had a lot of success in Queensland most notably with the multiple Group One-winning mare Srikandi.

Maher missed Saturday's race because he was in Sydney at a yearling parade but stable representative Annabel Neasham said Villermont was likely to press on to the Queensland Derby.

"It was a great ride by Damian from the wide barrier. The instructions were to drive forward and lead if possible and he did just that," she said.

Browne said he thought it was a solid run from Villermont who would be improved.

"He just kept giving but the second one came very hard in the last 200 metres," he said.
