Persuader set to make a mark at Caulfield

Thursday 26 April 2018, 2:17pm

A lot of work has gone into getting filly Persuader to the races.

After a debut third at Mornington earlier this month, Persuader jumps straight to stakes company for her second outing at Caulfield on Saturday when she runs in the Listed Redoute's Choice Stakes.

Trainer Mick Price has always had a good opinion of the filly, but her temperament has not always been the best.

That has resulted in the filly requiring a lot of barrier work, and practice, to get her to the racetrack.

"She has been behaving herself lately," Price said.

"It took a couple of months and a couple of tries to get her right and you have to be careful with fillies like her.

"Her temperament is something that we needed to be careful with.

"She was a difficult tempered horse at the barriers a few months ago which is why she hasn't appeared until late in the season."

Persuader defeated Price's Group One Champagne Stakes-winning filly Seabrook in a trial at Geelong in January, but did not make her racing debut until April 16.

Price was taken by the filly's performance at Mornington that day when she came from sixth at the 400m mark to finish third behind Daskarzine, also an entrant on Saturday.

"She ran on well at Mornington and the 1200 metres is going to suit her better and I'm expecting her to run on into the money on Saturday," Price said.

Price will also be represented by Fighting Harada who is resuming from short break having been placed in his previous two tries on country tracks.

"He's well in himself," Price said.

"It's a race to start him off in at his home track and then we can look for something over 1400 metres.

"That's the trip he needs."

Early betting on the race suggests Fighting Harada is the more fancied of the Price pair at $10 with Persuader at $17.

The Hawkes Racing-trained Sunset Watch, who carries the No.1 saddlecloth on Saturday, dominates betting at $1.90, firming from an earlier quote of $1.95.

"The top one is the one to beat on Saturday after his win here last time," Price said.
