G1-winning jockey Jimmy Andrews dies

Thursday 26 April 2018, 12:43pm

Former jockey Jim Andrews, who holds a unique place in Queensland racing history, has died aged 69.

Andrews was among Brisbane's top apprentices in the late 1960s riding more than 150 winners at a time of limited opportunities.

He became the first 7lb (3kg) claiming apprentice in the post WWII era to ride a Classic winner in Queensland when Bright Shadow took out the 1968 Queensland Oaks.

Trainer Jack Wilson shocked everyone when he elected to go with Andrews as his own apprentice Larry Olsen was booked for another of his runners, So Nice, who finished second.

Andrews other biggest win was on Victorian galloped Abebe who won the Windsor Flying which is now the QTC Cup.

He was also a noted rider at the now defunct Albion Park circuit.

Andrews retired in the mid 1970s and made a belated comeback about 20 years ago before retiring again.

He had been ill for some time.
