Caulfield race to get fillies back on song

Monday 23 April 2018, 6:04pm

Training partners Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young have decided to reassess immediate plans for fillies Angelic Spirit and Snogging who will line up against each other at Caulfield.

Both were heading on a path towards black-type races but instead will contest a 1600m-race for three-year-old fillies on Saturday.

Angelic Spirit was a last-start fourth at a Sandown midweek meeting on April 2 after which a scope found the filly to be full of mucus.

"She ranged up to win at the 200 metres but blew up," Busuttin said.

"Michael (Walker) said she pulled up very thick in the wind and the strapper rang me afterwards and said she was coughing at the stalls.

"We got her scoped by the vet and she was full of mucus.

"We've treated her and she's back on track and we just want to see her racing well."

After an impressive first-up win at Sandown last month, Snogging was sent to Adelaide but finished ninth in the Laelia Stakes at Morphettville on April 7.

The filly was being prepared for a shot at the Group One Australasian Oaks (2000m) on May 5 and Busuttin and Young elected to bypass the traditional lead-up, the Auraria Stakes (1800m) at Morphettville on Saturday won by Sopressa.

"She ran really well first up but then second-up raced like a flat horse," Busuttin said.

"She was in line for the Australasian Oaks but seeing she ran flat second-up I didn't want to take her back to Adelaide for the 1800, so we'll race her on Saturday.

"Hopefully Saturday will get them both back on track.

"There's no set races in mind for either of them but obviously the aim is to pick up black-type if we're good enough at stage.

"Saturday's race is worth $120,000, so it's great prize money for both fillies."
