Troy Portelli fined for improper conduct

Friday 3 May 2013, 4:20pm

Trainer Troy Portelli has received his second fine this year for using abusive language on a racetrack.

The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary (RAD) Board found Portelli guilty on Friday of improper conduct in that he directed "foul language" towards jockey Dean Holland in the mounting yard after the Listed Hareeba Stakes on February 13 at Mornington.

The trainer was fined $2500 for a previous offence at Seymour in January when he was found guilty of verbal abuse towards a clerk of the course with $1000 suspended if he did not re-offend.

Portelli now has to pay that $1000.

His latest $1000 penalty is suspended on the condition he does not commit another breach of the same rule.

Portelli pleaded not guilty at Friday's hearing.

The trainer was unhappy with the way Holland rode Eight Bills, who sat outside the lead in the Hareeba Stakes, before finishing sixth.

Portelli's instructions had been to get cover back in the field.

An inquiry was opened on the day after Holland complained to stewards about Portelli's behaviour.

Holland was later charged by Racing Victoria stewards with not taking all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing on Eight Bills.

The RAD Board dismissed the charge against Holland in late March.
