Only Wanna Sing defies wet-track concerns

Saturday 17 February 2018, 2:12pm

Promising two-year-old Only Wanna Sing dispelled a theory he was a wet-track duffer when he upset a long-priced betting move on runner-up Red Stina at Doomben.

Only Wanna Sing had failed badly on a heavy track at his previous start and when a storm again made Doomben a heavy track he opened at $7.

The gelding eventually started at $6 before beating Red Stina ($8) by a nose with three-quarters of a length to the favourite Pinch Memory ($3.20).

Red Stina had been heavily backed at as much as $36 in opening markets and many punters thought she had won in a deceptive finish.

About the only one who thought Only Wanna Sing had won was trainer Robert Heathcote who was all smiles after the race.

"I thought he had just held on. I wasn't worried about the wet track as I reckon it was a heavy 12 when he got beaten last time an this time the track was a lot better," Heathcote said.

"He had trialled well and I have always had a wrap on him."

Heathcote has paid up for Only Wanna Sing in the Group One Golden Slipper at Rosehill on March 24 but is not committed to a run.

"I will see how he pulls up but we always have the winter as an option for him," Heathcote said.
