Flemington return for improved Sanglier

Wednesday 14 February 2018, 3:42pm

Trainer James Cummings is convinced two-year-old colt Sanglier has improved from the spring as he prepares for a stakes racing return at Flemington.

The Godolphin team has three horses entered for races at Flemington on Saturday which also includes Group Two-winning filly Banish who resumes in The Vanity.

Sanglier returns in the Listed The Asian Executive Stakes (1100m) after a two-start spring campaign in which he finished sixth on debut in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes before a third to Blue Diamond contenders Long Leaf and Oohood in the Merson Cooper Stakes.

Cummings was impressed with the colt's win in a recent Flemington jump-out on the straight course.

"He has form around horses like Long Leaf and his recent trial showed me he'd made significant improvement on his last preparation," Cummings said.

"This is an open race that will be a good test."

The Group Three Vanity (1400m) for three-year-old fillies has a field of 11 headlined by Group One Thousand Guineas winner Aloisia who was the $2.30 favourite on Wednesday.

Banish was turned out after winning the Group Two Fillies Classic (1600m) at Moonee Valley in October and Cummings is hoping the decision not to press on deeper into the spring can be rewarded this time in.

Banish's preparation for her return has included a Sydney barrier trial.

"Her fresh record has been excellent in the past and after a solid trial at Rosehill she looks to have gone ahead and looks capable of running very well first-up," Cummings said.
