Legend Of Condor to make Pierro return

Tuesday 13 February 2018, 5:41pm

Golden Slipper aspirant Legend Of Condor gets the chance to prove he is as good as his trainer thinks he is when he runs in the Pierro Plate at Randwick.

Gerald Ryan believes the colt has the makings of a top-line performer and can show that on Saturday.

A debut winner in October, Legend Of Condor won a Rosehill barrier trial last week in preparation for his second start.

"I think whatever he does he will improve on," Ryan said.

"He will tell me whether he is going to be a genuine chance in the Golden Slipper like I think he will be."

The colt, to be ridden by Josh Parr, is one of four winners among the 13 entries, five of whom are as yet unraced.

He will carry 57kg under the set weights and penalties with the John O'Shea-trained Irish Bet the topweight with 58.5kg.

Irish Bet won the Inglis Preview in December.

Ryan has yet to win the Golden Slipper with his best results second placings with Snitzerland, runner-up to Pierro in 2012, and Paint in 1996 behind Merlene.

The trainer is keen to give Mariquita a second chance at stakes level with the mare to run in the Group Three Triscay Stakes.

She never recovered from an awkward start when last in the Group Three Angst Quality in October, her only other foray into black-type racing.

"She is a back marker and that's how she races but she has a good first-up record," Ryan said.

"I'm keen to give her a crack at a good race."

Star Of Monsoon will continue his summer campaign in a 1200m-benchmark 85.

He has put together two wins and a second from three starts as a gelding after racking up 11 minor placings as a colt.

"He was a bit unlucky last time at Canterbury and I think he should have won," Ryan said.
