Robert Heathcote to sing for Slipper

Monday 12 February 2018, 2:36pm

Promising two-year-old Only Wanna Sing will take the first step to a possible Golden Slipper campaign when he returns to racing at Doomben.

Only Wanna Sing won a Doomben trial last week and trainer Robert Heathcote has declared he is ready to run in a Two-Year-Old Handicap at Doomben.

His winning time of 49.82 seconds was the fastest of Tuesday's two-year-old heats.

The gelding had two runs early in the season, running an eye-catching second on debut to Ef Troop over 1050m on November 4 at Doomben.

Ef Troop went on to start one of the favourites in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and is being aimed at the Golden Slipper.

Only Wanna Sing struck trouble when a well beaten fifth behind Singular Sensation at Doomben on November 18.

Heathcote immediately sent him for a break with the $3.5 million Group One Golden Slipper at Rosehill on March 24 as an aim.

"There was a case to say he should have beaten Ef Troop at their first starts. Ef Troop has gone on to show he is one of the best two-year-olds in Queensland if not Australia," Heathcote said.

"On the run behind Ef Troop we decided to pay up for the Golden Slipper. If he continues to measure up we can head south next month.

"He is set to run on Saturday and hopefully he draws a good barrier so he can show what he can do."

Only Wanna Sing was one of eight entries taken on Monday for Saturday's race with Heathcote also nominating Pinch Memory, a Doomben winner on debut earlier this month.
