Steve Tregea's determination pays off

Toowoomba trainer Steve Tregea's determination to buy broodmare Miss Argyle has rewarded him with a possible future star in Sunshine Coast winner Bergerac.

Bergerac claimed his fourth win at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

Tregea, who runs a combined training-breeding business at Windemere Stud, was the original underbidder on Miss Argyle when she was a yearling.

"She is a lovely looking mare by Iglesia and like all the breed there is plenty of size about her,"Tregea said.

"Gai Waterhouse outbid me and bought her for one of her clients. But then I noticed Miss Argyle in a dispersal sale and went down and bought her."

"It has been a good buy because she has been served nine times and had nine foals and is in foal again."

Bergerac, who is by Queensland-based stallion Drumbeats, now has four wins from eight starts.

"That win was a bit special as he had to overcome a lot of problems in the run. There isn't much doubt he is a big track horse," Tregea said.

Winning jockey Larry Cassidy agreed.

"I had all sorts of trouble getting a run and when he got clear I thought he would run a good third," Cassidy said.

"But he hit the line hard. It was a special effort."

Tregea never gets carried a way with his horses and will take Bergerac through his grades but is not ruling out the gelding being a carnival horse.
