Regimental Pride aimed at Magic Millions

Saturday 13 October 2012, 2:04pm

Regimental Pride will be given the chance to emulate his mother in January's Magic Millions Classic after a scoring a come-from-behind win at Rosehill on Saturday.

Trainer David Payne said the rich Gold Coast race was a target for the colt after he successfully backed-up to win The Sydney Children's Hospital Plate (1100m), seven days after failing on debut in the Listed Breeders Plate.

Regimental Pride is a son of More Than Ready out of the 2003 Magic Millions winner Regimental Gal, and is owned by accused murderer Ron Medich who was not on track to see the colt win.

Payne said Regimental Pride would have three to four weeks in the paddock before returning to target the $2 million feature.

"I thought he would win last week (in the Breeders Plate) but it was very disappointing," Payne said of the colt's ninth placing.

"I think it was just stage fright which can happen with horses in their first start.

"He's a handy little horse and he'll go to the paddock now."

Regimental Pride ($17) raced near the speed and faded on debut but was back in the field this time and finished strongly near the inside to defeat Standard Bearer ($26) by a short half-head with equal favourite Sammy's Girl ($3.20) a length away third.

Joint favourite Crotchet ($3.20) showed good speed to lead and was full of running into the straight before weakening late to finish 10th.

Noel Mayfield-Smith, trainer of the runner-up, said Standard Bearer was being aimed at the Inglis Classic.

"He botched the start and got pushed and shoved on the turn so it was a good effort," Mayfield-Smith said.

Jim Cassidy gave Sammy's Girl, the first foal of champion filly Samantha Miss, his seal of approval.

"It was a really nice run. Next time in she'll be a better horse," Cassidy said.
