Third time lucky for owner Bill Andrews

Friday 12 January 2018, 2:33pm

No-one would blame owner Bill Andrews if he stocked up on four leaf clovers, horseshoes and rabbit's feet before watching his horse Feltre run at the Gold Coast.

Feltre will be having his third attempt to win the $1 million Magic Millions Trophy (2200m) on Saturday after finishing second in the race for the past two years.

In 2016 Feltre finished a nose second to Tinto and jockey Ryan Wiggins was so sure he had won, he celebrated wildly after the line.

The race was 1800m that year and was increased in 2017 to 2200m when Feltre was a close second to Group One performer Stratum Star.

There are no Group One rivals in this year's race and Andrews is hoping it will be a case of third time lucky.

"I have been around racing for too long to believe in omens but Brian (trainer Smith) has done a great job with him and we drop sharply in the weights here," Andrews said.

"I would like to win more for the horse and Brian than me."

Brisbane-based Andrews has horses trained in several states with his best the Perth Group One winner Scales of Justice.

Premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller will have three runners in the Trophy with Black On Gold, My Guiliano and Tumultuous.

Waller's Queensland manager Paul Shailer said all three were expected to race well on Saturday although a softer track would help.

"There are no Group One winners in the field this year and it looks a most even race where luck will play a part," Shailer said.

"But our three are fit and ready to go and it is a $1 million race."
