McEvoy duo confirmed for Millions

Wednesday 3 January 2018, 11:24am

Trainer Tony McEvoy has arrived in Brisbane to inspect his Magic Millions Classic hopefuls Sunlight and Crockett before declaring both are still on course for the $2 million race.

Sunlight was a brilliant last-start winner and will have her final hit-out for the Millions in the Two-Year-Old Handicap (1100m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

She has firmed from $41 to $7 for the Magic Millions Classic (1200m) on January 13 and is safely in the field with $61,500 prize money.

McEvoy had always intended to give the filly two runs before the Classic and he has stuck to that plan.

"I thought she would need another run before her win and I was of the same opinion after it. I haven't changed my mind since seeing her again," McEvoy said.

"This race on Saturday seems a good lead in to the Magic Millions with Houtzen and Le Chef both winning the double in recent years."

McEvoy was disappointed with Crockett's effort when he finished seventh in the Group Three B J McLachlan Stakes at Doomben last Saturday.

"He is a much better colt than that. Whether it was the heat or a case of an off day I don't know," McEvoy said.

"But at this stage it is still the Magic Millions Classic for him but we will probably have a change in his gear with some blinkers."

Crockett won a race in Adelaide before finishing second to leading Classic contender Ef Troop in the Phelan Ready Stakes.
