Gingernuts again on road to recovery

Thursday 28 December 2017, 11:27am

Gingernuts is again recuperating at King's Park Equine Clinic after an infection scare post-surgery for a fractured pastern.

The New Zealand-trained Gingernuts was operated on at the University Of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic at Werribee for the injury suffered on the way to the barriers before the Group One Emirates Stakes at Flemington last month.

Gingernuts was recuperating at King's Park at Mornington when staff noticed the gelding wasn't doing as well as expected after being weaned off painkillers.

King's Park's Dr Ben Mason said there was a problem around the surgical site of Gingernuts' injured leg.

"We realised one of the screws had gone amiss," Mason told Melbourne radio station RSN927.

"It hadn't broken but we think there was a little bit of infection around one of the heads and that was quickly dealt with.

"We're happy with the outcome so far."

Mason says Gingernuts is again eating and moving well in his box.

He said Gingernuts would remain boxed for another month before starting on a graduated walking program that would be revised week to week.

"He had a minor hiccup at the start but the uni has done an amazing job as they always do," Dr Mason said.

"The prognosis is very good going forward."

A Group One winner on both sides of the Tasman, Gingernuts is raced by a Te Akau Racing Syndicate and trained by Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards.
