Montreal cruises to emphatic victory

Tuesday 26 December 2017, 6:34pm

Montreal has demoralised his rivals at Randwick to move towards a step up to Group company during autumn.

The lightly raced four-year-old switched off over the closing stages of Tuesday's Spinalcure Racing4Research Sprint (1200m) yet still won by 3-3/4 lengths to stay unbeaten two starts into this campaign.

"It was very pleasing to see. We were confident we had the right horse here and Rachel (King) took full advantage of that," co-trainer Adrian Bott said.

"Rachel let him stride. He showed plenty of early natural speed and once he rolled along he was able to string them out.

"There were some pretty slick sectionals there mid-race, and he was able to break their hearts."

The win was especially welcome for Gai Waterhouse's training partner as his father Tony owns Montreal through Evergreen Rich.

First-up this preparation, Montreal won a 1000m-race at Wyong by 4-3/4 lengths on December 13.

"We've always thought a lot of him and certainly think he can get up to Group quality," Bott said.

"If can continue through his grades we'll see a very nice progressive type. There are no firm plans for him yet but we can start mapping that out now."
