Jockey Samara Johnson farewelled in Young

Tuesday 19 December 2017, 6:37pm

Picnic jockey Samara Johnson has been farewelled at the Young racecourse where she rode her last winner.

The racing community along with family and friends gathered at the NSW Riverina course on Tuesday to honour the memory of the 25-year-old who died at the scene of a single vehicle accident at Eurongilly on December 3.

Her partner Garry Kirkup suffered serious injuries when the car left the road and struck a tree.

The Canberra trainer was unable to attend the funeral as he remains in hospital recovering from abdominal surgery but a tribute to Johnson was read on his behalf.

Following a request from her family, the majority of mourners wore jeans and boots and a touch of purple, Johnson's favourite colour.

Johnson rode Liabilityadjuster to win the Young Cup on October 7 for Canberra trainer Doug Gorrel who has been instrumental in keeping Kirkup's stable operational.
