Queensland racing puts on a brave face

Brisbane Racing Club officials have put on a brave face in the wake of Black Caviar's retirement.

The BRC were hoping to entice Black Caviar's owners and trainer Peter Moody to Eagle Farm on May 11 for the Group One BTC Cup (1200m) until Wednesday's shock announcement.

The club shifted the venue for the BTC Cup from Doomben to Eagle Farm to cater for an expected crowd of more than 40,000.

"She was always at the top of the wish list to come here but we knew that it was never definite," BRC chairman Neville Bell said.

"The owners have shown courage in making that sort of call. It would've been enticing to keep going but they've obviously got the horse's welfare at heart."

Bell said the mare's dominant win in the BTC Cup two years ago would live long in the memories of Brisbane racegoers.

"We were very privileged to have her here two years ago and we should all feel thankful she's raced in our lifetime," he said.

"She'll be the benchmark for all other horses to be compared to just as Phar Lap was."
