Garcia sends Wohler home on winning note

Thursday 9 November 2017, 1:46pm

German trainer Andreas Wohler will leave Melbourne with a win beside his name even it's not the one he really wanted.

Wohler, trainer of 2014 Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist, brought Red Cardinal this year but he finished 11th of the 23 runners on Tuesday.

Red Cardinal will stay in Victoria to be trained by Darren Weir as will Mr Garcia, winner of the Twitter Trophy (1800m) at Flemington on Thursday.

Both European horses, recently bought by Australian Bloodstock, were ridden by Kerrin McEvoy.

"I think they'll have some fun with this horse over here," Wohler said.

"He didn't have the best run and he had to wait for the gaps to open up, but when it did he was very good."

"Australian Bloodstock bought both Red Cardinal and Mr Garcia so they'll both go to Darren Weir tomorrow, and I'm sure he's going to enjoy training them."

Mr Garcia, the $4.40 favourite, gave McEvoy his first win of the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington when he closed strongly to put three-quarters of a length on Carraig Aonair ($17) with Hogmanay ($6.50) another short half head third.

"We didn't have any joy here on Tuesday," McEvoy said.

"But this horse has travelled out as a partner for Red Cardinal and it looked a nice race for him, and he won well."
