Bloodlines to help Coral Bay on wet ground

Thursday 19 October 2017, 11:42am

Bloodlines indicate promising three-year-old Coral Bay should have no trouble handling wet conditions at Doomben when he attempts to build on his recent creditable performance in Sydney.

Heavy rain fell in Brisbane early in the week but the weather cleared on Thursday and Doomben was expected come back to the soft range by Saturday when Coral Bay runs in the Icon Group Handicap (1350m).

Trainer Stuart Kendrick has a big opinion of Coral Bay and has trained most of the gelding's family.

Coral Bay is by Show A Heart out of Zilzie making him a full brother to stakes performer Banda Spice and a half-brother to the promising Raja Ampat.

All three were bred and are raced by Ross Cutts and his family who also raced multiple Group One winner Show A Heart.

"Banda Spice and Raja Ampat handle soft tracks so I would expect Coral Bay will have no trouble," Kendrick said.

Last month he took Coral Bay to Sydney where he ran fourth to Goodfella over 1400 metres in a Three-Year-old Handicap with the winner scheduled to line up in Saturday Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick .

"Goodfella looks pretty promising and he did run fourth in the Magic Millions Classic," Kendrick said.

"Coral Bay can have two runs in Brisbane to finish his campaign and then he can spell with next year's winter three-year-old races in mind," Kendrick said.

"Who know he might even make a Guineas horse. After all he has done it all in one campaign and won two races after trialling very well."
