Brown promises genuine test for Caviar

Thursday 11 April 2013, 5:03pm

The Randwick 1200-metre track record could be in danger if Corey Brown has his way in Saturday's TJ Smith Stakes.

Far from being intimidated by the presence of Black Caviar, Brown plans to turn up the heat on the champion mare by making full use of Rain Affair's high-cruising speed.

Brown isn't predicting Rain Affair will become the first horse to lower Black Caviar's colours but he isn't backing away from the challenge of trying.

"They will be running good time to beat him," Brown said.

"He just seems to be able to hold that high cruising speed and quicken off it.

"Against that quality of field on Saturday it will be tough but he will give them something to chase.

"She's not going to be getting an easy run like she did last time."

Black Caviar claimed her first track record in February when she blazed down 1000 metres of the Flemington straight in 55.42s.

Whether she can set another on Saturday will largely depend on how much the Randwick track dries out and whether it is fit for a record-breaking performance come the ninth race.

Better Than Ready is the current 1200m track record holder at Randwick, establishing the mark of 1:08.19 in last year's Brian Crowley Stakes.
