VRC hoping for crowd of 25,000 to see Winx

Wednesday 4 October 2017, 12:08pm

The Victoria Racing Club is hopeful a big crowd will turn up on Turnbull Stakes day to see champion mare Winx race at Flemington for the first time.

Winx is a short-priced favourite to extend her winning streak to 21 in Saturday's Group One Turnbull Stakes (2000m) for which she is set to face six rivals.

Winx has raced only three times in Melbourne, winning back-to-back Cox Plates in 2015 and 2016 at Moonee Valley as well as claiming last year's Caulfield Stakes at Caulfield.

VRC chair Amanda Elliott said the club would be hoping for a crowd of around 25,000 at Flemington on Saturday.

"There's so much excitement around Winx racing finally at headquarters," Elliott told RSN927.

"She has obviously won her two magnificent Cox Plates and she has run at Caulfield, and she's been stabled at Flemington but she's never graced the track."

The Turnbull is planned as Winx's final lead-up race to her attempt at a record-equalling third Cox Plate win three weeks later.
