Ataraxia bound for Victoria Derby

Saturday 30 September 2017, 2:19pm

Much has changed for James Cummings since he became a fourth-generation Victoria Derby-winning trainer a year ago, and he has his eyes on the prize again.

Now the head Australian trainer for the global Godolphin operation, Cummings unveiled plans for Ataraxia after the colt's win in Saturday's Listed Dulcify Quality (1600m) at Randwick.

Last year, Cummings sent Prized Icon to win the Flemington Classic and join his father Anthony, grandfather Bart and great-grandfather Jim on the honour roll.

The race is firmly on the agenda for Ataraxia, who is likely to have his lead-up run in the Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield.

Ridden by Michael Walker, Ataraxia ($7.50) got the better of Dissolution ($6) by half a neck, with $4 favourite Sambro another short neck back in third.

"You could argue he should be unbeaten this preparation," Cummings said.

"His next race is likely to be the Norman Robinson and then he'll go to the Derby.

"He is a half-brother to Complacent, who ran second a few years ago (2013).

"I don't think he would back up in the Spring Champion Stakes."

The Spring Champion (2000m) is the feature race on the program at Randwick next week and another lead-in to the Derby (2500m) at Flemington on November 4.

Walker said although the margin was narrow, Ataraxia had plenty in hand and would go well over longer.

"He had more up is sleeve," he said.

"He found a bit more when he needed to."
