Age no barrier as Someday wins at Doomben

Saturday 9 September 2017, 2:14pm

Trainer Desleigh Forster received a special thrill when Someday defied age and the threat of retirement to win at Doomben.

Nine-year-old Someday ($13) stormed home to beat Dreams Aplenty ($3) by three quarters of a length with 1-3/4 lengths to Mystic Opal ($3.40) in the St Vincent's Care Services Handicap.

Someday hadn't won since the Listed Brisbane Handicap (1600m) at Doomben in December, 2014.

He was originally trained by Kelso Wood and Tony Gollan before having a year in the paddock and going to Forster six months ago.

"He had a few problems and they told me they didn't think he would race again and would be retired if he didn't come up this campaign." Forster said.

"But I have taken him along nice and slowly and he looks beautiful. I thought I had him right to win the Ramornie at Graton in July but they ran a course record and he was run off his feet."

Forster is noted for her work with older horses because she gives them a lot of beach work.

"Our farrier is friends with Someday's owners and he was the one who suggested they give him to me because of the beach work," she said.
