Patel ready for Australia debut

Wednesday 6 September 2017, 8:10am

Indian jockey Trevor Patel has warmed up for his Australian race debut by riding four winners at the Deagon trials.

Patel, 25, is in Australia on a trial basis and will have the backing of five-time Brisbane premiership trainer Robert Heathcote.

He rode Storm Girl, Page One, Still Cool and Trommelschlagen to win for Heathcote at Tuesday's trials and finished second on another of stablemate Foxy Affair.

Patel, 25, recently rode his 1000th winner in India and has also won several stakes races.

He is from Mumbai and hopes to get off to a quick start to his Australian adventure this weekend.

"I have wanted to go and ride outside India. My wife is with me and we will stay for a minimum of three months," Patel said.

Heathcote said he hoped to give Patel his first Australian ride with Five Card Stud at Caloundra on Sunday.

"Provided the race field stands up he will be riding on Sunday. After watching him in the trials I think he will make it here," Heathcote said.
