Craig Williams wins Scobie Breasley medal

Sunday 3 September 2017, 10:46pm

Premier Melbourne jockey Craig Williams has won a fifth Scobie Breasley medal for riding excellence.

Williams made a late charge in the premiership battle with apprentice Beau Mertens and his consistency throughout the 2016/17 season won him the award named for the late champion rider.

The voting for the Scobie Breasley Medal is done by Racing Victoria stewards with points awarded for the best ride at each metropolitan meeting.

Winx is a Sydneysider but the champion picked up yet another award as the Victorian Horse of the Year for her Group One wins in the Caulfield Stakes and Cox Plate from two starts in the state last season.

The award is determined by votes from racing media and officials for performances on Victorian tracks with the same panel judging the Fred Hoysted award for trainers.

This year it went to the Lindsay Park team headed by David Hayes who trains in partnership with his son Ben and nephew Tom Dabernig.

They took the award by one vote from Winx's trainer Chris Waller for their effort to produce two Group One winners on Blue Diamond Stakes day.

John Allen won the Tommy Corrigan medal for jumps jockeys while up-and-coming trainer Archie Alexander received the Colin Alderson Rising Star award.

All the premiership winners were also presented with trophies for their achievements at a function in Melbourne on Sunday night.
