Tony Sears after international owners

Sunday 27 August 2017, 4:34pm

Toowoomba trainer Tony Sears has had one of his best starts to a season and is set to cap it off by cementing relations with several international clients.

Sears has had seven winners to start the new season but missed the win of Tycoon Ace at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

He was in Singapore visiting several owners who he hopes will send more horses to his stable.

It will complement the loyal band of Queensland owners Sears has built up in recent years including Tycoon Ace's connections John Harvey and his family.

Leigh Sears, Tony's wife, said Tycoon Ace had been racing well and could go on to better things.

"He got under the one minute nine seconds for 1200 metres and not many horses can do that," Sears said.

Unfortunately her husband was unable to watch the Gold Coast races on Saturday despite Leigh's best efforts.

"I wrote out a list of instructions as long as your arm on how to get Australian races on his Ipad. But it was all to much for him and he had to phone," she said.

The stable has built a strong association with apprentice Matt McGillivray who rode a treble on Saturday including Tycoon Ace.

McGillivray is leading both the senior and junior metropolitan premierships with 10 winners since the new season started on August 1.

"It was my first treble in town and trainers like Tony have stuck with me. I am confident I can keep it going," he said.

McGillivray, 25, is one of the busiest riders in the state and has ridden about 275 winners in his career.
