Roger James eyeing Australia with stayer

Wednesday 23 August 2017, 11:52am

New Zealand trainer Roger James is looking at Australian options for stakes-winning stayer Von Tunzelman.

James has yet to lock in the lightly raced gelding's spring program which will be decided after his first run at home.

"He's come back well and I'll look to step him out over 1400 metres once there is improvement in the tracks," James told NZ Racing Desk.

"That will hopefully be in the next two or three weeks and then we'll decide about Australia, be it Sydney or Melbourne."

Raced by his breeders Brendan and Jo Lindsay, Von Tunzelman has won four of his 11 starts including the Listed Kaimai Stakes (2000m) at Matamata in February.

"He's nice and strong now and if anything he's come back more relaxed, which is good," James said.

Von Tunzelman ran second in a 1000m-trial at Avondale on Tuesday.

James has enjoyed much success in Australia, most notably with multiple Group One-winning mare Silent Achiever who recently produced her second foal by Frankel.
