Rain to bring out best in Second Effort

Friday 5 April 2013, 1:40pm

There might not be a better wet-tracker in Australia than Second Effort.

And probably no better $31 chance engaged at any venue this weekend.

Second Effort goes into Saturday's Group Three Sebring Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill off the back of a distant last in the Challenge Stakes behind Snitzerland at his last start and a 12th of 15 behind Moment Of Change in a Group One race at Caulfield in September before that.

But neither run is of any significance.

The rain that has fallen in Sydney this week, however, is.

Second Effort has won at each of his five appearances on slow tracks and at three of his four runs in heavy going.

"I took him to Sydney the other day hoping to strike a wet track and it didn't come," said trainer Clinton McDonald.

"But it looks like we've got it on Saturday."

Second Effort will jump from barrier 15 in the 16-horse field but McDonald reasons that after eight races on the wet Rosehill track it should be a case of the-wider-the-better.

While the Sebring would undoubtedly be a worthy race to win, Second Effort's major goal this preparation is the Listed Wangoom Handicap at Warrnambool in May.

"It's a bit of an ambition to win two Wangooms in a row, that's what we're aiming at," McDonald said.
