Easy trial for Hanwritten ahead of Doomben

Thursday 10 August 2017, 3:10pm

Talented sprinter Hanwritten has had a deliberate soft trial in preparation for his return to racing at Doomben.

Hanwritten will be having his first start since finishing fourth behind Your Way at Randwick in February when he tackles Saturday's Chris Munce Racing Handicap (1050m).

The seven-year-old gelding has won five races in a stop-start career restricted to 11 races.

Hanwritten has won twice at Randwick and also won a Saturday metropolitan race at Doomben but more was expected of him after his first start.

In that race he beat subsequent multiple stakes winner Ball Of Muscle in a maiden at Newcastle on November 23, 2013.

It was enough for him to be taken to Hong Kong but he did not settle in and was returned trainer Matt Dunn's Murwillumbah stable early last year.

"He has been good for us but he has had a few problems. Nothing serious but enough niggles to make him a horse we have to handle cautiously," Dunn said.

Hanwritten was sixth in a recent Gold Coast trial, just under two lengths from the winner Always Sacred.

"We deliberately didn't want to ask him for much in the trial. I know he has won twice first-up but he did put in a wonky one first-up as well," Dunn said.

"He was a bit soft and the trial will have been good for him."

Dunn isn't committing Hanwritten to a Sydney return during the spring.

"He has raced well down there but I want him to win a few this campaign. He is lightly raced so he has plenty more starts in him," Dunn said.
