Brisbane trainer Kelly Schweida is growing in confidence Shogun Sun can win a Group One race in the spring but he believes Sydney won't see the best of the gelding until the autumn.

Shogun Sun showed he could be up to the Group One Golden Rose at Rosehill on September 23 with a strong win at Randwick on Saturday.

But Schweida isn't getting carried away and realises the task will not be easy.

"I had Oink in the race last year and he was well beaten. The Golden Rose always has some top class horses in it," Schweida said.

"They will come out of the woodwork in the next few weeks so it would be silly to get too carried away."

Nevertheless, Schweida believes he has a genuine racehorse on his hands.

"I thought he might be top class when he was an unlucky second at the Sunshine Coast last month. So I decided to head to Sydney on Saturday," Schweida said.

"The Randwick race looked perfect race for him. It was a test and if he couldn't keep up with them, I would have thought it a waste of time looking at the better races."

Schweida has no doubt that Shogun Sun will be a better horse next year when he could be a Sydney autumn or Brisbane winter carnival contender.

The other option is to tackle the rich Magic Millions Guineas in January as Schweida is sure the gelding will run a strong 1600m to 2000m.

"He's a big dumb bloke. I know everyone says it but he really is still six months away from being at his top," he said.

Shogun Sun was to return to Brisbane on Sunday and spend a week on the water walker.

Schweida is tossing up whether to give Shogun Sun another race or a trial before he returns to Sydney for the Run to The Rose on September 9.
