Tempo key to Secret Admirer

Wednesday 3 April 2013, 5:11pm

Grahame Begg fears Secret Admirer's racing pattern will again count against her when she takes on pin-up mare More Joyous in Saturday's Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

The five-year-old has consistently been competitive at the highest level throughout her career and last spring alone was placed three times in Group One company.

But she has not won a race since the 2011 Epsom Handicap and Begg isn't sure that will change on Saturday given the likely tempo of the Rosehill feature.

"That's the problem with her on Saturday, the lack of speed in the race," Begg said.

"They're not going to be flying in front and she is probably going to be a bit of a victim of the pace.

"Any of those horses who are backmarkers, they need them to run along."

A field of 11 will line up in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m) headed by More Joyous who has taken out the past two renewals, and last-start Coolmore Classic winner Appearance.

While Begg feels the race tempo may not suit Secret Admirer he says he cannot fault her work or attitude.

She has continued to please him since her first-up fifth to Pierro in the Canterbury Stakes in which she raced against her usual pattern.

"She was a bit fresh in the race and jumped and settled a lot closer than she normally does," Begg said.

"But she ran well and stuck to her guns.

"She's in good shape."

Secret Admirer is likely to be given another shot at the Doncaster Mile and Queen Elizabeth Stakes this autumn with a decision on her future to be made after that.

"We will see after this preparation what happens but she could easily go to stud this year," Begg said.
