Another winning Williams cast-off

Wednesday 3 April 2013, 2:07pm

Flemington trainer Saab Hasan learned early that prolific owner Lloyd Williams is just about the best source of second-hand horses in Australia.

And at Sandown on Wednesday the lesson was proven yet again.

The Hasan-trained Appoint collected a maiden victory that surprised most in the Dandenong Market Plate (1000m).

But his trainer said he had expected the colt to run well, if only because the previous four horses he'd bought from Williams had all been winners.

"I've had amazing luck with horses I've bought from Lloyd," Hasan said.

"Until today Appoint was the only one of the five I've bought from him not to win.

"It's a tribute to him more than to me. He just sells good horses."

Williams regularly culls his team, disposing of horses he feels aren't up to Group level, generally to the advantage of their new owners.

The success of ex-Williams runners has been astounding with one of them, Vengeance Of Rain, becoming a champion in Hong Kong and a winner on World Cup night in Dubai.

No such heights are anticipated for Appoint, but Hasan is confident the horse will improve on his latest performance when he gets out to a more suitable distance.

Appoint ($21) won by a length from Design For Life ($4.20) with Tap In Birdie($10) the same margin away third.
