Matt Dale seeks Highway with On The Fiddle

Friday 21 July 2017, 4:39pm

Matt Dale is relieved Racing NSW has put plans to reclassify Canberra trainers on hold, leaving him free to continue training horses for Highway Handicaps.

Dale will attempt to join Murwillumbah's Matthew Dunn on 10 Highway winners at Randwick on Saturday with On The Fiddle.

The popular Saturday races are restricted to country-trained horses with Canberra's status under consideration to be changed to provincial.

Canberra Racing Club officials met with Racing NSW this week with the result there will be no decision for at least three months and Dale hopes the status quo can remain.

"The Highway has become an important part of our programming for our up-and-coming progressive horses," Dale said.

Dale, who will bring past Highway winners Clipper and Super Star Bob for other races at Randwick, is confident On The Fiddle can follow the duo's example.

On The Fiddle, who resumed last month after more than a year out to address breathing issues, is backing up from an impressive Class One win (1300m) at Goulburn on July 7.

"He hit the line strongly there indicating this trip is what he's looking for," Dale said.

"He's down in the weights (53.5kg) so Saturday will be the acid test for him."

Dale said he thought Clipper would be "very competitive" in benchmark Handicap (1100m) which follows the filly's first interstate trip to Caulfield where she ran third.

Super Star Bob ($8) will use a 1200m-Benchmark race as the launching pad for his second preparation.

"It's the perfect track and distance to be kicking off at. He's going to step out to a mile this prep," Dale said.
