Matt McGillivray on city mission

Thursday 6 July 2017, 2:05pm

Apprentice Matt McGillivray is looking to build on his recent winning streak on the provincial and midweek circuit when he heads to Doomben.

McGillivray has been in great form with a winning double at the Gold Coast on Wednesday giving him 15 winners in the past four weeks.

His best effort was four wins at Rockhampton, including the Newmarket Handicap on Counter Meal, three weeks ago.

McGillivray, who returned from a stint in Sydney earlier this year, has had limited opportunities in the city on Saturdays because of the large number of interstate jockeys visiting for the winter carnival.

That changes this week when he has six rides at Doomben.

"The winners have been coming but I would obviously like a few more in town," McGillivray said.

At the other end of the experience scale, veteran jockey Robbie Fradd is set to pass 100 winners for the season for the first time since moving to Queensland four years ago.

The South African-born international jockey has ridden 98 winners this season and has several strong chances among his seven rides at the Doomben meeting.

Fradd could hit the mark on Friday when he rides at Ipswich.

If he can reach the milestone, he will be the third Queensland jockey to ride more than 100 winners this season alongside Jeff Lloyd and Jim Byrne.

"I missed seven weeks with a wrist injury and had a couple of suspensions so it hasn't been a bad effort," he said.
