Smart Coupe makes it two from two

Wednesday 5 July 2017, 2:39pm

Speedy filly Smart Coupe has taken the step to midweek city racing in her stride at Sandown to remain unbeaten.

The Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained two-year-old was sent out the odds-on favourite in Wednesday's Comcater Handicap (1200m) against her own age and sex after a dominant maiden win at Wangaratta last month over 1100m.

Smart Coupe pressed forward to take up the running and Linda Meech held the filly together until the final 300m.

Smart Coupe ($1.70) had 1-1/4 lengths to spare on the line over Lady Of Flanders with Kardashing a long neck away third.

"It was a bit of a test today, just getting out to 1200 metres but she relaxed quite nicely," Zahra said.

"She had a good look around but I like the way she finished the race off.

"She was solid enough at the end but she is probably just coming to the end of her preparation now."

Zahra said Smart Coupe was now likely to have a decent spell with a view to returning for a late spring and summer campaign.

"We're just happy to get a couple of wins on the board and let her mature up," he said.

Smart Coupe is raced by a syndicate and was bought for $22,000 at last year's Tasmanian yearling sale.

"We trained her mother too and she looked a lot like her mother, which was good," Zahra said.

The filly's dam Coupe won two of her 15 starts including the 2002 Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes.

Smart Coupe was Meech's only ride at the Sandown meeting and gave the jockey her 122nd win for the season.

Meech sits second on the Victorian premiership, 16 wins behind Dean Yendall.
