Scandiva in the mix for Golden Slipper

Saturday 30 March 2013, 2:09pm

Scandiva has put her family connections on show and earned a Golden Slipper start with victory in the Magic Night Stakes at Rosehill.

A daughter of Scandinavia, the dam of Black Caviar's mother Helsinge, Scandiva ($7) held on after leading down the straight to beat Shahad ($31) by a short head.

Trainer Anthony Cummings said there was every chance the filly would take her place in next week's $3.5 million Golden Slipper (1200m).

"It's a fairly tight schedule but she is an improving filly and all going well, she can take her place," Cummings said.

"She had to work hard to get over from her wide gate and showed improvement from her last start and hopefully she takes the next step.

"She comes out of the Villa Verde - Overreach race in the spring and that seems to be the right form."

Overreach is the dominant favourite for the Slipper and firmed even further after beating Villa Verde last week.

Villa Verde is the only horse to beat Overreach which she did in the Debutants Stakes at Caulfield in October.

Assail and Bulbula were sent out the $6 equal favourites but finished seventh and eighth respectively.

The Clarry Conners-trained Assail was the favourite in early markets for the Slipper but has been battling a hoof injury since her race day scratching from the Magic Millions in January.

Greytfilly ($9) ruined her chances in the Magic Night when she came out a long last of the 13 starters and managed to beat just two runners home.
