Rudy's win special for Clarke family

Sunday 25 June 2017, 1:42pm

It has taken nearly half a century but the Clarke family finally have their names etched on a Tattersall's Cup trophy.

The Clarke brothers Tom, Don and David, race Rudy who took his prize money to more than $1 million when he won the Tattersall's Cup at Doomben on Saturday.

The brothers hail from Chinchilla, on the western Downs, and come from one of Queensland country racing's best known families.

Their family has had had many good horses with one of the best was the Harry Hatten-trained Casawynk who won several open company races.

Casawynk was considered a great chance in the 1970 Tattersall's Cup but was brought down in a three-horse fall and never raced again.

Tom Clarke bred Rudy from his mare Go On Now Go but missed the race after leaving for an overseas trip last week.

"You can bet he will watch the replay about one thousand times," David Clarke said.

Rudy's trainer Helen Page wouldn't be drawn into comparing the gelding with top stayer Magnolia Hall who ran third in the 1991 Melbourne Cup.

"I have had Rudy a lot longer and it is hard to compare," she said.

"Rudy has been so consistent throughout his career in Brisbane and when we have gone to Sydney and Melbourne.

"Tom will be thrilled and it is a pity he missed the win. Not many horses can win a million and Rudy has a special place in all of our hearts."

Page has shown her love for Rudy by naming her Gold Coast stables after him.
