Edmonds chases Cup joy

Friday 16 June 2017, 2:53pm

Trainer Toby Edmonds admits he isn't sure what to expect from new stable acquisition Tears Of Joy in the Listed Ipswich Cup.

Edmonds has made an art form of getting well bred former NSW and Victorian mares and winning races with them in Queensland.

The latest example was at the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday with former Melbourne mare Clockwork Orange.

But whether he can make it a double for the week with Tears Of Joy is not something Edmonds will predict.

Tears of Joy won four races in Victoria and also ran second in the Kyneton Cup last spring.

She was bought by Rosemont Stud at the recent Magic Millions Broodmare Sale.

Tears of Joy was also entered for the Stayers Cup final (2150m) at Ipswich but Edmonds elected to tackle the Cup over the same distance.

"The owners were keen to have a go at the black-type race with her. So I thought we might as well have a throw at the stumps in the Ipswich Cup when the field quality fell away a bit," Edmonds said.

"She has won at the distance and won in the wet and is down on the minimum."

Edmonds also has sprinter The Virginian chasing a feature win in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes.

"We will just have to play it by ear with the weather," he said.
