Odds-on New Horizons misses out on debut

Wednesday 7 June 2017, 2:36pm

The second Australian runner by former champion UK galloper Frankel has finished out of a place on debut at Sandown.

New Horizons, prepared by Darren Weir, became the first galloper by Frankel to race in Victoria.

Foaled in Japan from Irish-bred Canadian Group One winner Miss Keller, three-year-old New Horizons was brought to Australia as a yearling.

Sent off the $1.70 favourite, New Horizons finished fourth, beaten 3.5 lengths by $21 chance Deadly Choices in Wednesday's Chef's Hat Plate under Brad Rawiller.

"On face value he was a little bit disappointing," Rawiller said.

"But he gave me a nice feel through the race and I expected him to win on straightening.

"I thought he'd give me a good kick but when he didn't it was like he didn't know what was to be done.

"I'm sure the race outing today will do him the world of good."

Rawiller said being northern hemisphere-bred, New Horizons was giving away six months in age to his rivals while at the same time carrying the same weight.

Frankel was unbeaten in a 14-start career in England highlighted by a stunning 11-length win in the Queen Anne Stakes at the Royal Ascot meeting in 2012 and his progeny are showing plenty of ability.

Last month Soul Stirring provided Frankel with his first classic winner when victorious in the Japanese Oaks.

The only other Australian runner Frankel has had was the Chris Waller-trained Merovee which finished sixth in a Newcastle two-year-old maiden in March.
