Weir sets new city record at the Valley

Saturday 3 June 2017, 5:18pm

A stable favourite has provided Darren Weir with another training record at Moonee Valley.

Camdus' victory in the WT Partnership Handicap on Saturday gave Weir his 116th Melbourne metropolitan winner for the season.

Weir's achievement eclipses Lee Freedman's mark set in the 2005-06 season.

Last month Weir went past the Commonwealth record of 348 winners he set last season and during May's Warrnambool carnival he trained a record 14 winners from 30 races.

Weir said it was a great feat, especially for his staff at his Ballarat and Warrnambool bases.

"I've got to say a big thank you to all the crew at home. They do all the work," Weir said.

"I'm just the person who's got the name behind the stable.

"It's a big thrill to get the amount of winners that we've had."

Weir said it was pleasing to see Camdus get back to winning form, especially for Brad Rawiller.

He said Rawiller has a good relationship with the five-year-old.

"It was a big win as it got a bit messy midrace," Weir said.

"He ended up in a nice spot early and then the speed came out of the race.

"He was able to wind his way through the field and get to where we wanted and it was good that he let down and got the job down."

Sent out the $3.50 favourite, Camdus scored by a short neck from Chase The Horizon ($6.50) with Leodoro ($8) a nose away third.

Gallic Chieftain completed a double for Weir taking out the following race, the Essendon Nissan Handicap.
