Il Cavallo in record-breaking Sandown win

Wednesday 27 March 2013, 4:51pm

The pedigree suggested it should happen, the betting suggested it would and, in record time, Il Cavallo got the job done.

A son of Choisir from a half-sister to the international Group One winner Starspangledbanner, Il Cavallo rewarded connections for their patience with a stunning debut win in the Swettenham Stud Dash For Cash (900m) at Sandown on Wednesday.

Il Cavallo swooped on the leaders inside the 200m to score by 3-3/4 lengths and smash the course record.

Il Cavallo ($2.70) covered the distance that is reserved exclusively for two-year-old races, in 49.3 seconds, more than 0.8 seconds inside the previous mark.

And the win drew rare praise from winning rider Luke Nolen.

"I don't like to label them straight away," Nolen said.

"But this colt's definitely heading in the right direction.

"He'll win something much better."

The runner-up Thiamandi ($6.50) set the blistering pace that allowed Il Cavallo to finish off so strongly and held on for second, three-quarters of a length clear of Washington Square ($10).

Il Cavallo went through the sale ring at the Inglis Easter sale a year ago, only to be passed in when the bidding stalled at $250,000.

Retained by his breeder Tony Santic of Makybe Diva fame, his win has made the decision to pass him in appear a wise one.

While Il Cavallo made a promising sprinting debut, a possible staying find emerged from the Maiden Plate (1800m) in Duplicity Jones.

A graduate from the notable staying stable of Colin and Cindy Alderson, Duplicity Jones ($4.60) relished the step up in distance to score by 3-3/4 lengths from Centricity ($51).

"We've had a plan for him since he first raced," said Cindy Alderson.

"He's got the makings of a really good staying horse."
