Zamex gives Dunn eighth Highway Hcp winner

Saturday 3 June 2017, 3:00pm

Northern NSW gelding Zamex has finished strongly at Rosehill to give trainer Matthew Dunn his eighth win in a Highway Handicap.

The Murwillumbah-based Dunn and Canberra's Matt Dale now share top honours in the Saturday metropolitan races restricted to country-trained horses.

Favourite Zamex ($3.30) had too plenty in the tank at the end of the 1400m, outpacing Call the Captain ($31), who also comes from Murwillumbah, by 1-1/4 lengths.

"Matt's always had a really big opinion of him and obviously coming down here was the right move," Keira Dunn, Matthew's wife and stable representative, said.

"He's just so casual about life. He's the same in the stable but if he can keep finishing races off like that, he's a good horse in the making."

Cliff ($9) ran third, three-quarters of a length behind Call the Captain.

Jockey Tye Angland said Zamex showed his inexperience by jumping left out of the gate.

"Once he got in front he just floated," Angland said.

"Mentally he's probably not there fully which is a good sign because he's got form on the board and is winning.

"When that comes he's going to improve a lot and go to the next level.

"The further he gets up to a mile, maybe even 1800 (metres) where he can travel a bit further, you might see a better horse."

Dunn has previously indicated a strong showing could result in Zamex going to Queensland for the Group Three Sunshine Coast Guineas on July 1.
